MARGARET L. BROWN
President and Chief Executive Officer
Margie Brown became president and chief executive officer of CIRI on Jan. 1, 2005. She is responsible for overseeing and directing the company's business operations and activities while developing corporate policies, long-range strategies and annual operating and profit plans.
Brown, who is a Yup'ik Eskimo originally from Takotna, Alaska, has many years of service with the company. She served on the CIRI Board of Directors from 2002 to 2005 and from 1984 to 1987. She was first employed by CIRI in 1976, when she was hired as CIRI's assistant land planner. From there she rose through the ranks as vice president of land and resources from 1978 to 1983; vice president of oil and gas from 1989 to 1992; and senior vice president from 1993 to 1995.
During her earlier years with the company, Brown was instrumental in the implementation of the Cook Inlet Land Exchange. In addition, she managed the resources operations when CIRI's oil and gas businesses made significant contributions to the company's annual income.
After retiring from CIRI in 1995, Brown served as senior advisor of rural services for General Communications Inc. (GCI), an Alaska telecommunications company, from 1995 to 1997.
Ms. Brown currently serves on the 21-member national board of The Trust for Public Land, the board of the Anchorage Museum Foundation, the Alaska Federation of Natives board and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Nature Conservancy in Alaska. She also serves on the advisory boards for Alaska Airlines and the University of Alaska Anchorage Honors College. She was Alaska's representative on the National Park System Advisory Board from 1999 to 2003; and served the chair of the board of Assets Inc., an organization that serves developmentally disabled adults through employment and other services, from 1990 to 1996. Her community activity includes being a founding board member and board chair of The CIRI Foundation, which was established in 1982. Ms. Brown is a 1982 YWCA Woman of Achievement recipient and a 2007 Athena Award recipient. Both awards recognize women for their professional excellence and community service and also for actively and generously assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence.
Ms. Brown received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Oregon and her Master of Business Administration from the University of Colorado.
