SHAREHOLDER Voting
YOUR VOTE COUNTS
Voting in elections ensures that your voice is heard in any decision making process. Many people think that their vote does not matter; imagine if everyone felt that way. There have been many elections that have been decided by just a few votes.
In fact, during Alaska Governor Tony Knowles' first election in 1994, he won by 500 votes in the general election. The Get Out the Native Vote committee has estimated that Alaska Natives constitute 14 percent of the statewide adult population. If all eligible Alaska Natives voted during a normal turnout year (in which 55 percent of non-Natives voted), 25 percent of the electorate at the polls would be Native. This voting bloc would be more powerful than the Republican vote (25 percent), the Democratic vote (16 percent), and the non-partisan vote (15 percent). According to the Alaska Division of Elections, one vote can, on occasion, make all the difference in the world.
CIRI Elections
The right to vote in CIRI elections is significant. It is important to the corporation that shareholder voices are heard. By voting in the annual election of directors and participating in advisory and other votes, your voice is heard.
Only shareholders with stock that carries voting rights can vote in CIRI elections, and voting shareholders who return a valid proxy before the deadline or who vote in person at the annual meeting of shareholders are eligible to receive prizes. Additionally, service on the CIRI Board of Directors and Shareholder Participation Committees is limited to voting CIRI shareholders.
If you are an Alaska Native, but you hold nonvoting shares of CIRI stock, we encourage you to provide us with proof of Native descent-such as a Certificate Degree of Indian Blood. Once received, we can reissue your nonvoting stock so that it carries voting rights. To request a Certificate Degree of Indian Blood, please write to the Bureau of Indian Affairs at 3601 "C" Street, Suite 1100, Anchorage, AK 99503-5947, or phone the BIA at (907) 271-3519, or 1-800-645-8465.
Public Elections
For public elections, you may either register to vote in person while visiting the CIRI Shareholder Relations department, or by printing out on-line forms from the following organizations and mailing them to the appropriate office.
Alaska residents may visit the State of Alaska Division of Elections web site to register to vote, apply for an absentee by-mail ballot, or seek other information. If you experience problems or have questions about this web site or downloading any information, contact the Division of Elections directly.
Register to vote in states other than Alaska by going to the Federal Election Commission web site. The National Mail Voter Registration Form is one document that allows you to register to vote from anywhere in the United States. Make sure to follow directions carefully and submit all required documents. If you experience problems or have questions, contact the Federal Election Commission or your state's election office directly.
