Cultural Corner:
Celebrating July 4th – Inupiaq-Style

Brad Bodfish, who worked in the CIRI building as a summer intern for the Association of ANCSA Regional Corporation Presidents/CEOs, received an email from Charlotte Brower, of Barrow, containing a “photo from home.” Shown are whaling crews participating in the Fourth of July skin boat races in Barrow. The races are part of an annual celebration marking the nation’s independence – “Inupiaq-style.” Brower told Bodfish in her email to him that she is pleased to have the photo printed in the CIRI newsletter because sharing is “part of our cultural values.” Bodfish grew up in Barrow and moved to Stanwood, Wash., prior to his freshman year of high school.
