Elizabeth F. Conrad Learns Art of Basket Weaving

Two of CIRI shareholder Elizabeth F. Conrad's delicate, ornate small baskets are on display on the first floor of the CIRI building. Though she was in her fifties when she first created Alaska Native art, she has since made up for lost time and is becoming well known for her unique designs.

An Inupiaq, Conrad was born and raised in Selawik and has lived throughout Alaska and in southern California. Conrad is a proud mother of three children, all of whom are CIRI shareholders; and the grandmother of seven. In 1982, she helped a friend make Eskimo yo-yos and was inspired by the creative process, so she started making beaded necklaces and earrings. A year ago, renowned Aleut basket maker Sharon Kay demonstrated the art of basket making at the Southcentral Foundation Elder Program, in which Conrad is active. Conrad took the class and was inspired to make her own small baskets.

Conrad's design ideas for her artwork come to her at night. She then creates the pieces the following day and describes her creative process as intuitive, "The design also finds itself during the process of making," she says. She is happy with her life as an artist, mother, grandmother, wife and active with the Southcentral Foundation Elder Program.
