Rural Alaskan Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Boot Camp

The Rural Alaskan Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Boot Camp is a pilot project that is a collaborative effort between the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, the Alaska Process Industry Careers Consortium, the University of Alaska Anchorage and those in the industry.

The three-week "boot camp" takes place during the month of November 2002 at Endicott Island, a BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. facility located just north of Prudhoe Bay. The boot camp's purpose is to produce well-trained, ready to work roustabouts.

Each recruit will obtain their North Slope Training Co-Operative Safety card, Cook Inlet Safety Card, and 40-hour Hazwoper Certificate. Participants will learn the basics of operating facilities - material handling, welding operations, gas detection, vehicle operations and maintenance, hand tools, and record keeping, to name a few. The training will wrap up with two days of job shadowing in the operating facility. Participants will graduate with skills and experience that will qualify them for entry-level positions across a variety of industries, including construction, mining, oil and gas, and seafood.

Recruits and sponsors are needed. If you are interested in participating or sponsoring a recruit for $500 in the Rural HSE Boot Camp, contact Edith McKinnon with Alaska Process Industry Careers Consortium at (907) 770-5250.
