CIRI Descendants Attend Tacoma School of the Arts

CIRI descendants Thomas and Anthony Crow will attend the Tacoma School of Arts in Tacoma, Wash., beginning this fall. Seventeen-year-old Thomas is interested in studying music, art and animation while 15-year-old Anthony is interested in studying music and photography. The two are sons of CIRI shareholder Thomas Crow and grandsons of the late Gladys Crow, also a CIRI shareholder.

In its second year of operation, the Tacoma School of Arts was established for children who wish to pursue a career in the fine arts including music, dance and art. Formed in partnership with the Tacoma School District, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Broadway Center for Performing Arts, Tacoma Art Museum and the Washington State History Museum, students enter the school during their sophomore year. The school's curriculum includes Washington state high school required classes and a focus on the arts. Last year, the students of the school received the highest score among other Washington state high schools on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning exam.

CIRI Shareholder Tom Glazier Weds


Tom and Luz Glazier
CIRI shareholder Tom Glazier, Jr. married Luz Elena Cifuentes on Aug. 31 in Anchorage in an outdoor wedding at his parent's home. Tom and Luz honeymooned in the San Andreas resort town of Colombia and plan to live in Anchorage. Tom is a tanks inspector for Enterprise Engineering in Anchorage and Luz recently moved to Alaska from Colombia. The couple met through a mutual friend.
Shawna Larson Named Utne Reader "Top 30 Under 30"

CIRI shareholder Shawna Larson was named one of Utne Reader's "Top 30 Under 30" Young Visionaries. Larson is among 30 individuals profiled in the magazine's September/October issue for choosing a cooperative approach to leadership.

"Shawna and the other young people are helping to redefine activism in the 21st-century," says Karen Olson, senior editor of Utne Reader. "The young visionaries are radically changing our future through the simple act of collaboration."

Larson is Aleut from Port Graham and Athabascan from Chickaloon, and currently sits on the traditional council for the Native Village of Chickaloon. For the past two years, she has worked as a community outreach coordinator for Alaska Community Action on Toxics, a statewide organization focused on protecting environmental health and working to achieve environmental justice.

In her position, she has focused on dioxin and other contaminants known as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are slow to break down in the environment. She has collected resolutions from 50 tribal councils in support of strengthening the Stockholm Convention, a United Nations treaty aimed at elimination of toxic chemicals. "I am dedicated to continuing this work for the benefit of tribes and future generations," said Larson.

CIRI Descendant Jennifer F. Showalter Graduates

CIRI descendant Jennifer F. Showalter graduated in May 2002, with a master's degree in social work from the University of Alaska Anchorage. Showalter began working for the Kenaitze Indian Tribe IRA/Nakenu Family Center as a clinician soon after graduating. She is the daughter of Mary and CIRI shareholder James Showalter of Soldotna, Alaska, and the mother of Paul and Nadia Walluk. Jennifer and her family reside in Kenai, Alaska.
