Native Corporations Continue to Benefit Alaska

The second in a series of reports analyzing the economic impact of Alaska's Native regional and village corporations in Alaska was recently released by the Association of ANCSA Regional Corporation Presidents & CEOs. "Native Corporations, An Epic Story Benefiting Alaska" summarizes how the 12 regional corporations in Alaska and 11 selected village corporations have positively impacted the state's economy as well as provided philanthropic contributions and employment opportunities.

CIRI President and Chief Executive Officer Carl Marrs presented the findings of the report, as president of the Association of ANCSA Regional Corporation Presidents & CEOs, in late March to members of Commonwealth North, the Alaska and Juneau Chambers of Commerce, and on May 29 to the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce.

The report highlights the 2000 combined findings for the 12 regional corporations and 11 village corporations with significant gross revenues. Data compiled by CIRI Historian Alexandra J. McClanahan and Chartered Financial Analyst Julee Duhrsen includes:

  • Revenue of $2.5 billion and assets of $3.4 billion;
  • $64.5 million in dividends and $350 million in payroll (within Alaska);
  • Statewide employment of 10,600; and
  • $9.6 million donated to charitable organizations and $4.3 million distributed for scholarships to 3,400 recipients.

"As an Alaska Native regional corporation, we find ourselves in an interesting situation. Unlike most American businesses, we are striving to maximize our profitability while also enhancing the lives of our shareholders economically, socially, and culturally," said Marrs. "Here we are in 2002, 30 years after the signing of the Act, and we find ourselves having achieved many of these conflicting goals."
