Cook Inlet Housing Authority's
Strawberry Village Cottages Nearly Complete

Construction on the first 20 units of Cook Inlet Housing Authority's newest multi-family housing development is nearly complete. When the first 20 homes of the 60-unit project open for occupancy on Sept. 1, it will be Anchorage's first-ever "rent-to-own" affordable housing development.

A new concept in affordable housing, Strawberry Village Cottages represents the Housing Authority's first venture into family rental housing. Cook Inlet Housing Authority intends to put a new face on affordable housing by moving away from the typical high density, multi-family model and rising to an unprecedented level of quality.

"Part of what makes Strawberry Village Cottages so unique is that the homes are technically town-homes, that don't share any common walls," notes Cook Inlet Housing Authority President and Chief Executive Officer Carol Gore.

After 15 years, Cook Inlet Housing Authority intends to offer the cottages up for sale, but as in a town-home or condominium environment, home-owners will not actually purchase any land. They will own only the actual structure.

The project is aimed at serving members of the community who might not otherwise have the opportunity to own a single-family, detached home.

"We wanted to offer people a more affordable alternative to the detached, single-family home, but still offer many of the benefits associated with that experience," said Gore.

The first 20 homes are on schedule for occupancy Sept. 1, with 20 more units available Nov. 1 and the final 20 units available Jan. 1, 2003. "We're extremely pleased with the quality and community atmosphere of the homes," said Gore. "Strawberry Village Cottages was a well-researched pilot project for us and we couldn't be happier with the outcome."

According to Jeff Judd, Cook Inlet Housing Authority director of operations and asset management, interest in the project has been high, but applications are still available by contacting Cook Inlet Housing Authority.

"We've had an excellent response to this project, but it's not too late to reserve your space in the community," Judd said. "We're really encouraging people to check out this new program and see if it's right for them."

Applicants must provide verification of all sources of income and three months of bank statements. Credit histories are reviewed and personal and rental references are required. More information is available from CIHA at (907) 276-8822.
