| A Life Full of Experiences for Don Harper CIRI shareholder Don Harper has had his share of unique life experiences, and second chances. Harper, who is of Athabascan heritage, was born and raised in Fairbanks and attended boarding school at Mount Edgecumbe in Sitka. After a stint in the Army, he returned to Mount Edgecumbe. While there, Harper trained as an electrician and joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). He also married and had a daughter, Robin. Harper and his family moved to Seattle, where he received journeyman lineman status. In 1964, Harper moved to Anchorage and rented a house. This part of his life was profiled in chapter 29 of his niece Jan Harper-Haines' book "Cold River Spirits." Appropriately titled "The House In Spenard," this chapter relates Harper's strange experience while living in what he believes was a haunted house.
One day, while at work, his heart began to beat erratically. After an examination, he was told his heart was damaged from previous complications and he didn't have long to live. He returned to Anchorage where, luckily, another doctor gave him a clean bill of health. Inspired by his new lease on life, Harper reinvented himself. He signed up for computer courses at the University of Alaska Anchorage, and, much to his surprise, found he enjoyed working with them. These days, he takes great pride in his daughter Robin and granddaughter Dawn. When he's not busy working on a computer, he likes to walk. Though Harper's seen and experienced a lot, he remains optimistic, open to change, to life's mysteries and to whatever lucky second chances happen to come his way. |
