Susan Anderson joins The CIRI Foundation staff October 4 in the newly created position of assistant executive director. Her appointment was the result of a lengthy search and announced by Dr. Lydia Hays, executive director of The CIRI Foundation, in August.

The appointment of Anderson represents the beginning of a management transition period for the Foundation. In time, Anderson is expected to gradually assume responsibilities of the Foundation's executive director position, while Dr. Hays takes on special management and planning projects for the family of CIRI non-profit organizations.

Anderson was most recently the manager of the Continuing Education Programs for the International Society for Optical Engineering, a not-for-profit organization based in Bellingham, Wash. During the past 11 years, she was responsible for the design, implementation and management of nationwide continuing education programs for the Society.

She also consulted with National Alliance for Photonics Education in Manufacturing partners around the United States to facilitate communication and effective implementation of programs among universities, technical institutes and industry members. She coordinated more than 350
educational programs attended by more than 5,000 registrants annually and was responsible for the administration of the Society's scholarship and grant programs.

Anderson, a CIRI shareholder, was raised in Anchorage, Eagle River, Valdez, and Seward, Alaska. She received a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Western Washington University and a master's in adult education administration. Throughout the past five years, she has served on the Whatcom Literacy Council Board of Directors and the United Way of Whatcom County.
