CIRI SPOTLIGHT:
Wendy Wiltfong, Executive Assistant
CIRI shareholder Wendy Wiltfong has a new role to fill as the executive assistant to CIRI President Carl Marrs and the CIRI Board of Directors and she's looking forward to the new challenge and responsibilities.

Wiltfong was recently promoted from her position as executive secretary for administration. Prior to working at CIRI, she worked in public relations for Southcentral Foundation. In her spare time, she's finishing her degree in justice with a minor in public relations at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA).

Away from school, Wiltfong is married and a mom to an adorable six-Wendy
year-old daughter. She also finds time to coach gymnastics at Dimond High School, quite a daunting task considering there are 38 girls on the team. A competitive gymnast herself for 12 years, including a two-year stint on the UAA gymnastics team, Wiltfong feels competing and coaching helped shape her outlook on life.

"In order to handle the pressure that is innate to athletic competition, you have to develop an upbeat attitude," she said. "It's about respecting yourself and others so you are free to give your best to your team. In the end, so much about winning is about how much you believe in yourself."

One of the important qualities her gymnastics background has taught her aside from the ability to do back-flips and handstands is a strong sense of discipline and dedication. According to Wiltfong, an athlete has to learn to be focused, confident, disciplined and positive. She also believes it's important to develop a practical sense of priorities.

Wiltfong also knows how to budget her time. At UAA, she also developed and worked on the gymnastics team's newsletter, appropriately titled, The Twister Times.

Wiltfong, who was adopted, grew up in the Anchorage area. She is of Yupik and Norwegian descent and hopes to learn more about her cultural background. Meanwhile, she's enjoying all the good things the new year has already brought her, including her new position at CIRI.

In fact, she feels like doing a cartwheel. And, if anyone can, it's Wendy Wiltfong. CIRI Mac b/w

Make your mark on history

CIRI is developing an Alaska Native History Calendar, a project that will list an event in history for each day. Beginning in the early 1700s to the present, the calendar features everything from birthdays to the day a village corporation became incorporated.

If you know someone whose date of birth should be listed in this calendar or if you are aware of an event that should be noted, please fill out the form below and return it to CIRI. The goal is to include as many noteworthy people and events as possible. Since the information is being entered into a database, it's important to have the exact month, day and year, and not all dates are guaranteed to be used.
