CENSUS 2000 IS COMING

The census counts all Americans every 10 years. Alaska's population will be counted in much the same way that is done throughout the rest of the country, but with a slight Alaskan twist. The US Census Bureau, in consultation with Alaska Tribes, has devised a strategy to promote the census throughout the state, particularly in rural areas. According to the Bureau, that's important because the information gathered is used by many funding agencies, such as the Indian Health Service, Housing Authorities, schools and transportation agencies in allocating federal monies.

To help with the enumeration, the Census Bureau will recruit in each community for highly motivated and qualified people. Recruiting will begin in the late fall 1999 and early 2000; hiring will be done in March and training will be done locally.

If you are interested in working for the Census Bureau, please contact the Recruiting Office at the Anchorage Local Census Office at: (907)271-1281. The local Partnership Specialist working in the Cook Inlet area is David Olivera and he can be contacted at (907)271-1281.
