Myra Cook Opens New Business

CIRI shareholder Myra Cook of Marietta, Ga., has opened a new business and is a NovaStar Home Mortgage, Inc. branch manager. Her business serves and represents most states, including Alaska, and over 300 investors. She is the daughter of CIRI shareholder Alec R. Wik and granddaughter of Margaret Dolchok and the late Emil Dolchok.

Chris Kiana Earns Second Master's Degree & Writes Books

CIRI shareholder Chris Kiana received a master's degree in rural development from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in May. This is his second master's degree. His first was a master's of business administration from Alaska Pacific University. When Kiana isn't busy with his contract/consulting business he writes. He has written a book for children titled "Wally, The Lost Baby Walrus," illustrated by his mother Minni Kiana Morkem. He has also written the mystery novel "Alaska Crying Baby," and is currently working on another book for children.

Traci Turned One

CIRI descendent Traci Love Key turned one on May 7, 2002. She is the daughter of CIRI descendent Ronnie McCord and Travis Key. Traci is a happy baby who started walking at 10-and-a-half months. She is the granddaughter of proud CIRI shareholders Ronald McCord Sr. and Freida McCord. Traci is the great granddaughter of CIRI shareholders Nora McCord and Fedora Constantine, both of Tyonek.

 

Christopher Velez Graduates

CIRI descendent Christopher Juan Velez graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in theology from the Baptist College of Florida in January 2002. He is a 1997 honor graduate of West High School and is the son of CIRI shareholder Nora Velez and her husband Raphael of Anchorage. Juan was listed in "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities" and now works for the Indian Health Service in San Antonio, Texas. He is thankful for The CIRI Foundation's support, which helped him through college.

Rodney McCord Uses Skills Learned in AmeriCorps

CIRI descendent Rodney McCord, who attended Galena Charter School his freshman through junior years, completed his senior year at Tokotna High School and graduated in May 2001. Following high school, McCord joined AmeriCorps in Nenana and graduated this past February. He is now working in maintenance for Cook Inlet Housing Authority's Salamatof Heights elder housing in Anchorage. He is the son of proud CIRI shareholders Ronald McCord Sr. and Freida McCord and grandson of CIRI shareholders Nora McCord and Fedora Constantine both of Tyonek.

Lindsey Rowe Graduates from High School

CIRI descendent Lindsey Morgan Rowe graduated from Garfield High School in Seattle, Wash., in June 2002. Lindsey graduated with a 3.9 grade point average which placed her in the top five percent of her class of more than 400 students. She was active and has received numerous awards during her high school career ranging from student of the month to receiving one of 10 outstanding achievement awards at her school from the Seattle American Legion. She plans to attend Smith College in Northampton, Mass., studying biology, marine or environmental science. Lindsey is the daughter of CIRI shareholder Christy Rowe and husband David.

Francisca Talavera an Intern/Consultant for Sesnon

CIRI shareholder Fran Talavera is a graduate intern, sponsored in part by The CIRI Foundation, working as a consultant for Sesnon Consulting in Seattle, Wash. Talavera facilitates the development and administration of national and international non-profit organizations in her capacity as an intern/consultant for Sesnon, which specializes in social enterprise consulting for non-profit organizations. She has completed a policy manual for the Washington Literacy volunteer program and in May she joined fellow employees on a trip to London to provide social enterprise consulting.

A graduate student at Seattle University, Talavera is studying for a master's degree in non-profit administration. A graduation chair, she will receive her master's degree in December of 2002. For her thesis project, she plans to focus on a CIRI sponsored non-profit or educational organization with the idea that her research be pragmatic and beneficial to Alaska Native people.
