Calling
for Entries for North American Indian Prose Award
The University of Nebraska Press invites book-length nonfiction manuscripts to be considered for the annual North American Indian Prose Award. The award, sponsored by the University of Nebraska Press in conjunction with the University of California, Berkeley, is given on the basis of literary merit, originality and familiarity with North American Indian life.
The competition invites authors of Native descent to submit biographies, autobiographies, history, literary criticism and essays. It excludes fiction, poetry, drama, collections of interviews and work previously published in book form. The winner receives a cash advance of $1000 and publication of the award-winning manuscript by the University of Nebraska Press.
Previous winners include Diane Glancy (Claiming Breath), Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve (Completing the Circle), K. Tsianina Lomawaima (They Called It Prairie Light: The Story of the Chilocco Indian School), W.S. Penn (All My Sins Are Relatives), Vincent Mendoza (Son of Two Bloods), Brenda Child (Boarding School Seasons: American Indian Families, 1900-1940), Leroy TeCube (Year in Nam: A Native American Soldier's Story), and Amanda Cobb (Listening to Our Grandmothers' Stories: The Bloomfield Academy for Chickasaw Females, 1852-1949).
Deadline for
submissions is Monday, July 31. All finalists are sent to the contest
jury, who will reach a decision by November 1. Manuscripts, which should
be book-length (at least 100 pages) and double-spaced, can be sent to

Summer
Day Camp Offered at Alaska Native Heritage Center
The Alaska Native Heritage Center is offering a summer day camp for children 6 to 13 years of age. The Naanguarvik Day Camp, pronounced nong-war-vick and meaning 'a place to play' in the Yup'ik language, provides an interactive learning opportunity for children. The focus of the camp is art, performance and environmental knowledge with some language instruction. Children will

learn about the five major Alaska Native culture groups from master artists and tradition-bearers, concentrating on one culture each day. Each one-week day-camp session is designed for a specific age group and is limited to 15 campers. Campers bring their own lunches except for Friday, when a cookout will be held. Registration for each one-week session ranges from $125 for ANHC members to $160 for non-members. A limited number of scholarships are available. The shopping, restaurant, and condominium development will be carried out by Intrawest Corporation, the leading developer and operator of village-centered resorts across North America, including Whistler/Blackcomb. Construction of the Village is scheduled to begin before the end of this year, and an opening date is anticipated for the third quarter of 2002.
The centerpiece of the Village at MonteLago will be the Ritz-Carlton's hotel rooms and retail boutiques set within a bridge spanning the western end of the lake designed to look like Italy's famed Ponte Vecchio. Water taxis will

transport guests and residents throughout the entire Mediterranean-style community.
This will be CIRI's second investment at Lake Las Vegas Resort. In 1998, the corporation invested in the Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas Resort, a resort hotel property that opened last December.
