Cook Inlet Cultural Ambassador Scholarship
Competition Announced
Alaska Native women and men who are 18 to 25 years in age, living permanently within the Cook Inlet region and meeting other eligibility requirements are invited to participate in the 1999 Cook Inlet Cultural Ambassador Scholarship Competition. Six scholarships will be awarded for the conferred titles of Miss CICA, $3,000; Mr. CICA, $3,000; CICA First Attendant, $1,500; CICA Second Attendant, $1,000; Most Talented, $500; and Most Congenial, $250. The selected Cultural Ambassadors will represent the CICA Scholarship Awards during the title year by visiting schools, colleges and CIRI events to encourage young people to finish high school and college and pursue successful careers in their chosen field.
 
The CICA Scholarship Awards "recognize outstanding young Alaska Native men and women and are designed to encourage leadership, education and create self-esteem for all who participate while honoring their Native heritage. The Cook Inlet Cultural Ambassadors serve as role models for young people and set a standard of excellence for them to follow," said Lydia Hays, The CIRI Foundation Executive Director.
 
Awards week is June 6 through June 12, 1999, and the Awards Program will select winners on Saturday, June 12, 1999 in Anchorage, Alaska. Judging categories for the Awards are essay, personal interview, oral presentation, traditional apparel presentation, traditional talent presentation and impromptu questions. Contestant applications for the 1999 Cook Inlet Cultural Ambassador Scholarship Awards must be submitted by Thursday, April 1, 1999. 1999 Spring Shareholder Meetings
In preparation for the 1999 CIRI Annual Meeting, scheduled for June 5 in Anchorage, CIRI will be holding several special shareholder meetings this spring. These spring shareholder meetings, which rotate to various cities each year, are designed to inform shareholders about CIRI's day-to-day business operations and various lines of business. Are You an Alaska Native Vietnam Vet?
If you are a Vietnam veteran and an Alaska Native and you did not receive a letter from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in late 1998 regarding the recently passed Vietnam Veteran Native Allotment Law, then you are not on the BIA's mailing list. In order to receive information on the legislation, contact BIA with your name and mailing address and state that you did not receive the letter dated November 23, 1999 regarding the Vietnam Vet Native Allotment Law. Call the BIA at 1-800-645-8465, ext. 7.
 
Federally Funded Disaster Assistance Available
The Alaska Division of Emergency Services (DES) is taking applications for federal assistance from people affected by the Western Alaska Fisheries Disaster. Disaster victims may apply over the help line by calling 1-888-388-3473 from now through April 20, 1999.
 
"Funding for the new program was made available through a 1999 spending bill for the U.S. Department of Agriculture," said Kerre Martineau, DES public information officer. "People whose family income falls below federal poverty guidelines may apply for either Commercial Fishing Disaster Assistance or Subsistence Fishing Disaster Assistance."
 
Those eligible to receive the assistance include:
* Subsistence users of Yukon River drainage salmon stocks in 1998 who caught or received less than half the salmon they or their family usually eats because of low salmon runs. Subsistence users must be residents of the declared subsistence villages to be eligible.
* Commercial salmon fishing permit holders in the disaster area who held and utilized the permit between January 1, 1997 and July 30, 1998.
* Commercial salmon fishing crew license holders who purchased the license between January 1, 1997 and July 30, 1998 AND whose employer holds a commercial salmon fishing permit for the disaster area.
* Cannery workers/processors who worked for a salmon cannery/ processing plant in the disaster area during the 1998 fishing season OR worked for a salmon cannery/processing plant in 1997 and was unemployed in 1998 due to the disaster.
