CIRI Spotlight: Candace Beery, Land Manager

BeeryCandace Beery may be well known for her devotion to protecting and developing CIRI's land interests, but to participants of the annual CIRI Potlatch she's better known as the "peroke lady." Beery learned how to make the salmon and moose "pies" from her mother and325

she takes special pride in the "made-from-scratch" crusts that grace the perokes.

Beery takes her work just as seriously as she does making sure that the CIRI Potlatch fosters appreciation of Native heritage. She was promoted to CIRI Land Manager on March 31. She had most recently served as manager of land entitlement before her promotion. During the 1980s, Beery served as a Land Department intern while in college and she rejoined CIRI in 1993.

Beery's assignment is daunting. On a day-to-day basis she reviews oil and gas leases and timber contracts that CIRI is drafting. While she jokes that she is happy to say she's not an attorney, she can negotiate with the best of them because she knows just how hard CIRI worked to get its land entitlement.

While she looks at the overall impact of any proposal, Beery focuses closely on the details of them because finalizing contracts means making sure that every contingency has been considered. Essentially, any sort of oil and gas, timber, mining or natural resource development on CIRI land goes through Beery. Beery says much of the credit she receives should go to her loyal staff of Telissa Sickler, Tom Glazier, Debra Bissett and Dustin Lorah.

Beery is a shareholder of CIRI and The Aleut Corporation and she takes great pride in her Alaska Native heritage. She loves her work at CIRI because she's able to make a difference when it comes to protecting and enhancing CIRI's interests.
