| CIRI shareholder Alexis Colberg is the department manager for Early Head Start, a program of Southcentral Foundation's Human Services Division. Early Head Start, which opened Feb. 1, 2000, cares for children six weeks old to three years of age. | Colberg is proud of Early Head Start and enjoys taking care of and preparing infants and toddlers for school. She believes children need a strong foundation that is nurturing and steady, and says that without her own parents' support and love, she wouldn't be where she is now. For Colberg, "Family, friends and faith are important because they make life more meaningful and more fun."
Colberg joined Southcentral Foundation in 1993. She has an associate's degree in business administration from Alaska Junior College and plans to graduate this year from Alaska Pacific University with a degree in business administration. She looks forward to pursuing a master's degree in business administration as well. Also a Seldovia Native Association shareholder, Colberg was born and raised in the picturesque, coastal town of Seldovia. She describes it as a place whose character has been strongly influenced by the sea, and she has many fond memories of growing up there with her two sisters, two brothers, and her parents, John and Alta Colberg. She remembers many summers spent fishing for herring off the cannery dock, catching pink salmon further down the beach, and hooking silvers at the head of Seldovia Bay or off Rocky River. Often she and her brothers and sisters would walk the beach during low tide and dig for clams. In her spare time, Colberg likes to crochet and do needle work. But, her specialty and favorite hobby is making and decorating cakes for special occasions because she enjoys the creative process that is involved. In fact, her cakes are in demand by those familiar with her culinary talents. Colberg credits her mom for starting the cake baking tradition because her mom always made her favorite cake for her birthday. |
