CIRI shareholder and former CIRI vice president John Monfor passed away at his home in Seattle, Wash. on Sept. 28 at the age of 56. Mr. Monfor is remembered as someone who cared deeply about people and working for the betterment of Alaska's Native community.

"John was a warm and caring person with a wonderful sense of humor. He served CIRI shareholders for many years and was also instrumental in the development and growth of CIRI's non-profit organizations," shares Barbara Donatelli, executive vice president of CIRI.

For 10 years, Mr. Monfor served as CIRI's vice president and special assistant to the president. During this time, he worked closely with the non-profit organizations and paid close attention to the services they provided to shareholders. Committed to the shareholders, he was often between the Anchorage and Kenai offices visiting with shareholders one on one.

Throughout his career, he also served as a youth counselor and had been executive director of the Kenai Native Association.

And, said John's family, "He was a successful, loyal and dependable man with a heart of gold and a gift for mentoring and caring for others. He was a quiet man that did what needed to be done and never expected any recognition in return."

John Monfor was born Sept. 10, 1944, and raised in Kenai, Alaska. He graduated from the old Kenai school and went on to earn a degree in industrial development from the University of Oklahoma. In 1973 he married Chris deForest at the Kenai Russian Orthodox Church.

In addition to his wife Chris, he is survived by his children Stephanie Matheny, Michelle Monfor Fitzhenry, and Christopher John Monfor; his grandchildren Lauren, Alex, Christopher, Jr., and a grandchild to be born in March 2001; his brothers Fred and Robert Mamaloff and sisters Edna Linderman, Virginia Trenton, and Marjorie Jordan. Other family members include his aunt, Fiocla Wilson, and the Ross, Engelsted, Lorenzo, and Sacaloff families, as well as numerous nieces

and nephews.CIRI Mac b/w
