A Word from the President

CIRI President and CEO Sophie Minich

It’s March, and “springtime winter” is upon us! Longer days and bluebird skies combine with robust snowpack, turning Alaska into a winter paradise. Whether biking, hiking or skiing the trails, cheering on our Iditarod mushers or chasing the aurora borealis, I invite you to get out and enjoy the unique beauty of our region.

Early spring is also the time we start gearing up for summer. Before we know it, a new class of CIRI summer interns will be roaming our halls, bringing with them fresh perspectives, new ideas, and specialized strengths and skill sets.

CIRI’s internship program creates opportunities for students and recent graduates to directly apply their education in a practical work setting while gaining excellent experience and insight into CIRI’s business and culture. Interns are provided development and mentorship opportunities in a variety of career fields. This is a paid opportunity.

To be eligible for consideration, students must:

  • Be a CIRI shareholder or confirmed, registered descendant;
  • Have a 2.0 GPA or higher; and
  • Be in junior or senior standing and enrolled in a four-year degree program, graduated from a four-year program within the past year, or enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant vocational program.

I invite current students and recent graduates to find out more at www.ciri.com/internship.

This is also the time of year CIRI reaches the end of its yearly financial audit process and begins drafting its 2018 Annual Report, which includes the company’s financial statements, footnotes, and Management’s Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations. The Annual Report will be mailed to shareholders in mid-April.

In conjunction with the Annual Report, I look forward to sharing details of CIRI’s 2018 financial performance at our upcoming Information Meetings, to be held as follows:

  • Saturday, April 20 in Anchorage, Alaska;
  • Saturday, April 27 in Kenai, Alaska; and
  • Saturday, May 11 in Shoreline, Wash.

The 2019 Annual Meeting of Shareholders will be held Saturday, June 1 in Puyallup, Wash.

While 2018 presented both challenges and opportunities for our company, overall, I am pleased to report that CIRI posted solid financial results for the year ended Dec. 31, 2018. The company’s investment strategy has enabled it to deliver strong, consistent and sustainable returns to shareholders. Our portfolio of assets has grown in value, and CIRI’s Board and executive team have continued to expand our investment focus to include additional development projects and business operations that promise sustainable, stable growth. I am confident that CIRI is moving in the right direction—balancing a healthy dividend with the need to invest and grow the company.

I look forward to meeting with our shareholders to celebrate our 2018 accomplishments and discuss CIRI’s plans to continue to build a strong, prosperous company that can withstand challenges and seize new opportunities. Please join me at one of CIRI’s Information Meetings and/or the Annual Meeting. I hope to see you there!

Warm regards,
Sophie Minich
