CIRI shareholder Catherine Maliepaard was awarded her first patent for the invention of a child seat for bicycles. The seat allows children from infancy to a weight limit of 100 pounds to be able to ride with a person. She says that she came up with the idea because her youngest daughter has autism and doesn’t know how to pedal yet. Her daughter also exceeded the weight limit for all the bike seats designed for children. According to Maliepaard, “My daughter now enjoys the outside rides. This is my first patent and I am currently working on four more.” Maliepaard is the youngest child of CIRI shareholder Ernest Watson and Constancia Cinco.
