Congratulations to CIRI descendant Sam Schimmel, whose essay was featured in the 2019 State of Native Youth Report. The report is a publication of the Center for Native American Youth at the Aspen Institute (CNAY), of which Sam is a youth advisory board member. In addition to his work with the CNAY, Sam has served as an intern for Alaska’s Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C.; a youth representative at the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention; and a youth panelist for the Western Region Generation Indigenous Youth Conference, where he joined Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski in signing a bill to create a commission for Alaska Native children. A 2018 recipient of the CIRI Youth Recognition Award, Sam is currently a sophomore at Stanford University.
