For thousands of years, Alaska Native people have been working together for the good of the whole community and sharing responsibility for improvements. Southcentral Foundation (SCF) continues these traditions today with SCF’s Nuka System of Care. Nuka is built around the value of shared responsibility and ensuring systems and services are respectful and culturally appropriate. It is about achieving excellence in customer-owner satisfaction and connecting the Native Community with services that benefit everyone.

Over the past decade, SCF has received an increasing number of requests from organizations around the world to visit SCF and learn more about the continuing journey with the Nuka System of Care. As a result, SCF hosted the 3rd Annual Nuka System of Care Conference in June with the theme “Customer-ownership, relationships and a focus on holistic and multidimensional wellness.”
During the opening of the 3rd Annual NUKA System of Care Conference, CIRI Board Chair Thomas P. Huhndorf was presented with an Athabascan Chief ‘s necklace, honoring him as a tribal leader, by SCF President and CEO Kathleen Gottlieb and SCF Board Chair James Segura.
Attendees of the five-day conference learned how SCF deploys, aligns and integrates its relationship focused approach to health care delivery and how the Nuka System of Care can be applied to other settings. Participants also had the opportunity to hear from the United States’ leading advocate for high-quality health care Don Berwick. Berwick is a former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and founding CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
