Alaska Native artists Mike Livingston and Andrew Abyo build, restore, teach

The Alaska Native Heritage Center (ANHC) is hosting Alaska Native artists Mike Livingston and Andrew Abyo this summer while they build, restore and teach kayak-making to Alaska Native youth enrolled in ANHC’s award-winning, free, year-round high school program. Livingston will be at ANHC through mid-July and Abyo through August.

The artists are building two full-size kayaks, a smaller 3-foot model and refurbishing another with youth enrolled in the high school program. Abyo, of Pilot Point, Alaska, is a self-taught Sugpiaq/ Alutiiq artist and art instructor. Livingston, of Cold Bay, Alaska, is an Aleut artist, instructor and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Idaho.
